Title:

[Ira Nowinski photograph books of San Francisco and Baja California]

Creator/Contributor:

Nowinski, Ira, creator, photographer.

Abstract:

Photograph books, perhaps produced as artist's portfolios, containing selected images from a variety of Nowinski's bodies of work. Volume 1 contains images taken at the San Francisco Art Institute (including portraits of instructors, school grounds and classroom scenes, taken in the 1970s) and images from the following series: No Vacancy (portraits of low-income residents of San Francisco's South of Market district, scenes of activism pertaining to urban renewal efforts in that region of the city, and many residential interiors, taken 1971-1977), Diva (performers and scenes of the San Francisco Opera, where Nowinski worked as the official photographer, taken 1978-1990), and Cafe Society (portraits of literary figures, and their haunts, associated with San Francisco's North Beach district, taken 1978-1990). Volume 2 exclusively contains images of the Sixth Street corridor of San Francisco's South of Market district, including portraits of residents of single-room occupancy hotels, street scenes and residential interiors, probably taken from the mid-1970s to late 1980s. Volume 3 contains images taken in Baja California, including portraits and scenes of everyday people, street scenes, architecture and landscapes, taken 1978-1980. Among the noteworthy individuals, locations and events depicted in the volumes are Ansel Adams, Jack Hirschman, Leontyne Price, Teresa Berganza, Birgit Nilsson, Renata Scotto, Leonie Rysanek, Magda Olivero, Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Ceballé, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Micheline, Bob Kaufman, Richard Brautigan, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Michael McClure, Philip Lamantia, Harold Norse, Ted Joans, Ruth Weiss, City Lights Books, and a demonstration protesting the eviction of residents of the International Hotel.
